HOOK and Newnham Basics got their season off to a great start with a 38-run win at Calmore Sports.
Put into bat by the home side the visitors turned in a solid display as they scored 212, despite the fact Rhodes Franklin only top scoring with 34.
Jack Murrell, on his debut, was the next best with 29 batting at number eight.
Fellow debutant Martyn James was one of four players to hit 24 and this also included returning opener Kieran Thomson.
Brothers Josh and Matt Buckingham were the other two players to hit the same 24 score.
When the home side took to the field to bat, they were soon in trouble as James removed opener Sam Moss, thanks to a Richard Willcock catch with just one on the board.
The former Bountyman continued with a great 10 over spell which included five maidens and saw him finish with 3-9.
When he left the attack, Calmore were in big trouble of 51-5.
A Thomson run out of opener Mark Lavelle and Ben Johns being bowled by Liam Shore accounted for the other two wickets.
James Manning (57) and Ben Perry (34) staged a fightback, but Franklin (3-25) removed the top scorer and Anik Divecha (1-29) had Perry stumped by Josh Buckingham, one of three victims for the wicketkeeper.
It was left to Willcock to take the final wicket of the game, with the last ball of his first over as Calmore were all out for 174.
Next weekend, Hook are at home when Portsmouth are the visitors.
