THERE was delight for Odiham and Hampshire tennis ace Ryan Golesworthy as he won two National tennis doubles titles to bring his tally to three in a row.
Golesworthy currently holds the under-18s boys National Doubles Championship title which he won with Scotland’s James MacKinlay in August 2018.
In his first major event since coming back from injury, Golesworthy was partnered with Leicestershire’s Alex Solonenko and their first tournament was at the National under-18s boys doubles in London.
In their quarter-final match, the boys were up against Andre Raath (Hertfordshire) and Matthew Rankin (East Scotland). Golesworthy and Solonenko won 6-3, 4-6, 10-4.
In the semi-they dispatched Sussex players Noah Burton and Elliot Stevens 6-4, 6-4.
The final saw fourth seeds Golesworthy and Solonenko up against the in-form 3rd seeds, Henry Bowden (Hampshire) and Danny Flynn (South Wales).
Golesworthy and Solonenko started solidly, taking the first set.
There was a fight back from Bowden and Flynn who took the second set on a tie break.
In the third set tiebreak Golesworthy and Solonenko came out with all guns blazing, increasing their focus and intensity.
Their tactics paid dividends and they won their first National title together, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-5.
The next National tournament was at Nottingham and started only a week later.
Golesworthy and Solonenko the fourth seeds again were in fine form in their quarter-final, beating Leicestershire players, Oliver Burt and Matthew Howse, 6-0, 6-3.
In the semi-final they were up against previous opponents Henry Bowden and Danny Flynn (2nd seeds). This time they won 6-4, 3-6, 10-4.
The final saw Golesworthy and Solonenko facing a stern test against the top seeds from Cumbria, Ali Alaahassan and Billy Blaydes.
A tense, tightly contested match saw Golesworthy and Solonenko take the first set. Both teams threw everything at each other as the second set went to a tie break.
At 4-4, Solonenko thundered an emphatic backhand return down the line.
Golesworthy’s impeccable placement on serve at 5-4 resulted in the return going long.
Golesworthy held his composure and another well executed serve at 6-4 led to Solonenko putting away an aggressive volley to secure the title. Golesworthy and Solonenko won 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Golesworthy said: “We both played at a high level and winning two titles in two weeks is incredible. We had the confidence and determination to take our chances when they came to us."
There are five Summer National tournaments held by the Lawn Tennis Association between April and July 2019 at various venues around the UK.
Golesworthy and Solonenko now hold the first two U18s Boys Doubles titles.
