BASINGSTOKE’S Mr Football Peter Raynbird has ended 66 years involvement with the Basingstoke and District Saturday League after retiring.
The 93-year-old is a true legend of the local game and a great servant.
The president and press officer of the Saturday League said: “I became the press secretary in 1954. I will certainly miss talking to the managers and secretaries ringing in with their match reports. However I am sure my dear wife Iris will not miss the telephone ringing constantly on Saturday evenings.
“I should like to thank all of the club secretaries and chairmen for their assistance in all of the positions I have held in my time with the league. Finally I was very honoured in 1999 to have a cup named after me and at this season’s Peter Raynbird Cup Final I was presented with an inscribed crystal glass bowl and a bouquet of flowers for my wife in appreciation of our long services to the league I hope I have served you well.”
