HOOK and Newnham Basics hopes of returning to the Ageas Bowl again this summer was ended on Sunday afternoon, as they lost at Portsmouth and Southsea in the T20 Plate quarter-finals, by one wicket.
Hook put into bat on the south coast were soon in trouble, as lost both openers Harry Robson and Josh Buckingham with only six scored.
Richard Willcock (16) and top scorer Matt Buckingham (30) repaired the damage, as they added 50 for the third wicket.
Daniel Moore (10) and Kieran Thomson (24) kept the scoreboard ticking and Anik Divecha with an unbeaten 13 helped them to 134.
This proved just not enough as the home side made a good start scoring 44 for the first wicket, before Rhodes Franklin (2-18) removed both openers and Divecha bowled really tightly as his four overs yielded only eight runs.
Shane Brewer (4-33) snapped up two quick wickets, but Tom Benfield (33) and Ollie Kanavan (36 not out) put the Pompey side in the driving seat.
Jack Murrell (2-22) removed Benfield, but Kanavan hit a six to win the game off the penultimate ball.
Hook will now focus on winning the Southern League Division One title and entertain Rowledge on Saturday.
