The home side's winger Tom Ince came closest to a winner, sending an effort just off target from 25-yards before half-time.
Ince also had a first-half goal disallowed for offside.
and curled a late attempt wide.
Visiting centre-back Michael Morrison had an early attempt blocked from a corner in a game the Royals did not look like losing.
This Saturday, Reading are at home to Derby in the Championship.
