WHITCHURCH beat visiting promotion hopefuls Downton 1-0, despite playing the last 60 minutes with only 10 men.
This was after Aaron Randall was sent-off for a high mis-timed tackle with the score at the time still goalless The Jam Boys then won the game thanks to a penalty after Declan Shuttleworth was hauled down.
With Whitchurch’s normal penalty takers Randall sent-off and Nick Yeomans off injured.
George Bishop took the ball and made no mistake from the spot thumping the ball into the top corner.
The Jam Boys could have had a second late on as Lloyd Thompson went one-on-one with the Downton goalkeeper, but his shot was saved.
After the game Whitchurch boss Glyn Cherrett said: “The red card was right it was a high tackle, but more mis-timed and it was also a clear penalty.
Considering we played 60 minutes with 10 men I was very pleased with the result and one the boys deserved.
Whitchurch's next game is on Saturday, February 22 when they are away to Newport on the Isle of Wight.
A date for the diary for Jam Boys and Andover New Street fans is April 25.
This is when Whitchurch will take on holders Andover New Street in the final of the North Hants Senior Cup.
The kick-off is at 5pm at Andover Town’s Portway ground.
