A GROUP of young footballers from Overton is gearing up for an unforgettable international football tour in Hasselt, Belgium, during Easter 2024.
Overton Youth FC's under 14 team, comprising enthusiastic young players, are eager to make their mark on the international stage, representing not only Overton but the spirit of youth football in the region.
The tour is scheduled from Friday to Monday over the Easter weekend, providing the young footballers with a unique cultural and sporting experience.
The international tour, which had been a tradition of Overton Youth football team, was restarted last year.
Overton Youth FC chairman and U14s manager Michael Taylor was one of the many Overton residents who had the opportunity to participate in this unique experience when he was younger.
He along with coach Andrew Galvin, a fundraising committee and the U14 boys have now been proactive in ensuring that financial constraints don't hinder any player from participating in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The fundraising efforts have already kicked off with a Grinch-themed stall at the local Overton Christmas Market on Saturday, November 25.
Looking ahead, the team has an exciting Annual Race Night planned for February 3, at St Marys Hall, Overton.
The night promises virtual horse racing, a delicious curry, a lively atmosphere, and opportunities for race sponsorships.
Allyson Taylor, a member of the fundraising committee, said the team have also launched an online fundraising page.
She continued: "We also approached some local businesses as kit sponsors. The boys have got their normal kits. But they need a second kit because there might be a colour clash and to avoid potentially smelly shirts."
Their JustGiving page has already garnered an impressive £1,200.
The team are also utilising social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and X to spread the word and engage with the community.
Allyson added: "The funds raised are earmarked for the essential elements of the international journey. Each player's contribution covers travel expenses by coach, ferry costs, and accommodation."
