Basingstoke Croquet Club have emerged victorious in the Southern Division of the Southern Croquet Federation’s annual league for Handicap Association Croquet.
Playing against other clubs from Ryde in the south to Aldermaston in the north they notched up eight points from a possible ten.
The Basingstoke team included Ian Harrison, Roger Barnacle, Don Beck, Mike Roberts, and Nick Snell.
The club share the bowls green of the Thornycroft Bowls Club in South Ham.
Maintained by the borough council’s grounds team, it is the finest croquet court in Hampshire.
Although the 2024 season is coming to an end, the club will be open for business again in April next year.
Despite being a lesser-known sport, croquet offers a fascinating experience for people of all ages.
Contrary to popular belief, croquet did not originate in France; it began in Ireland and was brought to England in 1850.
