Basingstoke Hockey Club had a competitive weekend across its teams, with impressive victories and some challenging matches. Both Ladies 1s and Mens 4s continue to maintain unbeaten runs so far this season!
Ladies and Mens 1s both visited Bournemouth with different fortunes: The Ladies' 1s were able to deliver a commanding 5-1 win. Rachel 'Bobby' Roberts opened the scoring with a well-placed finish, followed by captain Claire Bowman deflecting for the second. Despite several injuries, the team kept their momentum, with Izzy Heney scoring twice and Ellen 'Titch' Knighton adding another. Bournemouth pulled one back from a short corner, but Basingstoke remained dominant.
In a tough encounter, the Men’s 1s fell 4-2 to Bournemouth. Despite goals from Dean Record and Dylan Brockbank, Basingstoke couldn't overcome a strong Bournemouth side and as a game where Basingstoke had chances, the opposition capitalized more effectively.
The Ladies’ 2s battled hard against Havant but ultimately lost 5-2. Despite the scoreline, the team showed resilience, with a determined effort that they'll aim to build on in future matches. Similarly, the Men’s 2s had a narrow 2-1 defeat against Trojans, with Phil Stewart scoring Basingstoke’s only goal in a well-contested match.
On the other hand, the Ladies’ 3s continued their unbeaten streak with a 3-1 win over Petersfield. Jude Bird’s classic opener was followed by goals from Ulrike Maier and Player of the Match Jess Dudman, sealing another great victory.
With their best performance of the season, Ladies’ 4s lost 4-2 lost against Isle of Wight. With only 11 players, Basingstoke worked hard, and Harriet Sage’s two excellent goals kept them in the match. Meanwhile, the Ladies’ 5s were beaten 3-0 by Havant in a challenging match but will look to regroup and come back stronger next week.
The Men’s 3s produced a strong performance to beat Weymouth 4-1. Josh Weir netted twice, with Oli Walker and Dharmik Patel also getting on the scoresheet in a well-rounded team display.
Maintaining their perfect record, the Men’s 4s dominated Isle of Wight 5-1. Fabs Maraschin opened the scoring, with Chris Townend adding another before half-time. Despite a quick response from the Islanders in the second half, Basingstoke pulled away with Fabs adding a second and Eliot Boyd scoring twice in the closing stages to secure the win. This victory keeps the Men’s 4s top of the table with five wins from five.
It was a tougher day for the Men’s 5s, who lost 8-3 to Gosport despite two goals from Zachary Baldwin and one from Peter Wood. The Men’s 6s also faced a difficult match, losing 3-0 to Portsmouth Pumas after a hard-fought first half ended goalless. Portsmouth’s younger legs and better structure proved too much in the second half.
In all, a week of varied results, with standout victories and determined efforts across all Basingstoke teams.
