Basingstoke Hockey Club is bursting with pride as three of its members - Sue and Ian Pett, along with Tania Bridge - made their mark on the global stage at the 2024 Masters World Cup in Auckland, returning home with dazzling medals!
Tania Bridge shone for Team Alliance in the IMC competitions, while Sue Pett donned the England O70s jersey, with Ian Pett masterminding strategy as England’s team manager.
England's O70s ladies were a force to reckon with in their pool matches, clinching four wins and a draw to secure their spot in the final.
Facing powerhouse Australia, they delivered an intense showdown, holding the score level in normal time.
But in a nail-biting sudden-death penalty flick finish, Australia edged ahead 4-3, leaving England with a hard-earned silver medal!
Meanwhile, Tania’s Team Alliance brought home gold in breathtaking style.
Locked in a fierce battle against Argentina, the game turned electrifying in the final 20 seconds, when Tania coolly converted a penalty flick to seal a dramatic 2–1 victory!
This unforgettable tournament saw 129 teams spanning multiple age categories from 39 countries compete over ten thrilling days, cementing its place as a pinnacle of global hockey.
A spokesperson from Basingstoke Hockey Club said: "Bravo to Sue, Ian, and Tania for their incredible achievements—you’ve made Basingstoke proud!"
