Basingstoke Bluefin Morris Dick is celebrating after beating a former world record holder on his way to claiming a hat-trick of gold medals at the Glasgow International Masters Swimming Championships.
The 67-year-old, who lives in Ellington Drive, Brighton Hill, competed in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke for men aged 65-69 at the championships, which took place in a 25m pool.
In the 100m and 200m he was up against a former world record holder but produced fine swims to see him off in both, claiming the 100m in a time of 1min 30.64sec and the 200m in 3min 24.60sec.
“I did not know about the former world record holder until somebody pointed out that he was in my age group,” Dick said. “I was really pleased to beat him though and I just got him by three tenths of a second in the 100m.”
Dick did not have it easy in the 50m either, where his main competition was a former East German international. However, the Basingstoke man produced a swim of 40.08sec to complete his hat-trick.
“I was pleased with the way I swam,” he said. “I recorded my best 50m and 100m short course times of the year so that was good.
“My 200m was not as good as it could have been but I was tired on the second day and just made sure that I did enough to stay ahead of the competition.”
